Healthy Habits Campaign – Week 9: Tip Top Teeth

This week’s #HealthyHabit is about looking after your teeth and how to keep them in great condition.

1. Brush your teeth twice a day

It is important to brush your teeth for approximately 2 minutes last thing at night before you go to bed and on one other occasion daily. This reduces plaque build-up and maintains a healthy mouth and smile.

2. Brush your tongue

Spotlight Oral Care explain that the bacteria on your tongue is the number one cause of bad breath, so it is important to brush your tongue as well as your teeth.

3. Replace regularly

Remember to replace your toothbrush/electric toothbrush heads regularly for maximum cleaning.

4. Flossing isn't just a dance move

Many people don’t realise that flossing is just as important as brushing. It is important to floss every day to remove any food, debris or plaque that may be lodged between your teeth.

5. Cut down on sugar

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle – eating well, not smoking and limiting your alcohol and sugar intake are all good for your dental health (and your overall health).

Be careful to check the label if you are choosing foods that are labelled as “low calorie” as these are often full of sugar.

6. Brush baby teeth pronto

If you have little ones, it is important to start brushing baby teeth as soon as they come through.

7. Get regular check ups

None of us like a trip to the dentist, but it is important not to put off your check-ups. In case of any issues, detecting them early means they are easier to treat and prevents them from becoming more serious.

It is recommended to visit your dentist for a check-up every 6 months.

8. Check your product ingredients

When choosing a toothpaste or mouthwash, look for products that contain fluoride and casein phosphopeptide.

9. Beware of staining

Many liquids that are dark in colour such as tea, coffee and red wine contain tannins, which leave stains on your teeth. A good tip is to try drinking through a straw to avoid excess staining.

10. Hydration is key

As with all aspects of health, it is vital to stay hydrated. It is recommended to drink at least 2L of water each day in order to produce saliva and avoid your mouth becoming dry.

The function of saliva is to act as an antiseptic and help to prevent decay.
