Back to Work: Beat the January Blues

The return to work after the holidays can be daunting to say the least, but we are here to help you make it more bearable.

1. Plan something to look forward to

A trip, a show, a meal – anything. Having something fun to look forward to is essential for making it through January.

2. Make a battle plan

Sometimes the fear of returning to work stems from being overwhelmed and not knowing where to start. Make a rough plan of action.

Clear out your inbox, marking important emails to reply to later. Decide which tasks are essential for today and focus on them.

3. Plan your outfit

Decide what you want to wear the night before and leave it out so you can get ready in a flash in the morning.

Pack your bag - office keys, Leap card, headphones, wallet, lunch, etc. You will be so grateful to your past self the next morning.

4. De-clutter your desk

If you have old or outdated files and papers piled up like the leaning tower of Pisa on your desk – it's time to take a trip to the shredder or recycling bin. Get rid of anything you don't need and wipe down the surfaces.

5. Get out

Nothing makes the work day drag more than staying in the office from morning to night – so make a conscious effort to leave the office at lunchtime, stretch your legs and enjoy some fresh air (and a sprinkle of sunlight if you’re lucky).

Getting a bout of Seasonal Effective Disorder (SAD) is quite common this time of year, so letting some natural light into your life on your lunch break is a great way to help with those low feelings.

6. Go Citrus

Citrus scents are proven to reduce stress. Treat yourself to a fresh to citrus scented hand cream or room spray to keep on your desk for a quick hit.
